Tours of tornado-hit area in Oak Openings planned

Visitors to Oak Openings Preserve Metropark will be able to see trees damaged by the June 5 tornado. Some trees are removed for safety purposes, and some are left standing. Trees that do not pose a risk to hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, and others using the park will be saved.

About Us

We are a group of private citizens who love the trees at Oak Openings Metropark. Recently, a catastrophic tornado moved though the region and damaged or destroyed approximately 150 acres of forest in the area we use for hiking, jogging, trail riding and skiing.

Subsequent clean up efforts have been controversial, and this web site is here to help facilitate clear communication, transparency and accountability with all future clean up efforts.

As a direct result of the public meeting on October 25th, he park leadership has publicly stated that these efforts will affect only dead and severely damaged trees, as well as those that pose a public safety hazard. We applaud this decision, and look forward to joining efforts with the park leadership in realizing this goal together.
